CHELMSFORD UNDER 13 CROWNED LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

The final game of the inaugural Essex league was fittingley played out on sunday between Chelmsford , the league leaders and Barking, in second place.
the winners would be crowned as Champions of Essex.

A bright sunny day greeted the boys at Barking complimented by a huge crowd befitting such an tense, occassion.

Barking struck first with a kick and chase to nail there credentials to the mast and take a 7 - 0 lead. Chelmsford`s pack didnt like this. The engine was turned on and the motor aimed at the heart of the Barking scrum, smashing through to release the graceful but deadly backs , putting Tom Gannon through to level the scores.

The Chelmsford pack played their best game yet, winning all their own scrum, and taking most of Barking ball against the head. a combination of the strength of the chelmsford props, the skill of our hooker, the drive of the second row and the pace and power of the back row, enabled the sublime but lethal backs to attack from all and any areas of the pitch with devastating results. Further first half tries followed for Harry Smith on the wing and N0 8 Ollie Skeates, all converted by scrum half and captain Sam Ridley

28 - 7 at the start of the second half and the chelmsford front five decided to rev the engines further ,driving harder and harder into the Barking scrum, breaking them down and then setting free the backs to pile on the points.

More tries from Gannon, Smith and prop Tom Leigh, wrapped up a virtuoso demonstation of total rugby from a side that has not lost a game in nearly two years

The game was stopped at 50 -7, chelmsford the winners to a brave, enthusiastic, and sporting Barking team who have much to be proud of and who were welcoming and magnanamous hosts.

Man of the Match was an easy choice....the whole U13 squad for turning up on cold wet windy training nights ,for playing on filthy muddy sundays week in and week out and without whom we would be nothing, we are one squad, one team, one Chelmsford !!

So Chelmsford add the title of Essex Champions to a list that includes, 3 years running festival winners and the Taunton Invitational amongst many others

CHELMSFORD MINIS STRIKE RUGBY GOLD

Chelmsford's magnificent mini rugby teams struck gold in three of the six trophies up for grabs at the annual Essex Mini Rugby Festival.

No less than 16 teams from Essex and north east London competed in the much prized sporting event in mixed weather at under seven through to under twelve age levels.

The sun shone on the magnificent sevens at Southend, where the young Chelmsford squad, having lost just three times in over 30 games this season, continued their winning ways beating South Woodham Ferrers, Maldon and then Braintree, scraping home with a last minute winning try.

Burnham on Crouch under 7s again provided stiff opposition, but they were also beaten in the dying seconds in the semi finals. There was nothing to separate the young Chelmsford side with the host club, Southend, in the final which ended 5 tries each. The trophies will be shared between the two Essex clubs until the 2009 finals. Top try scorers were Edward Crosby, Harrison Eades, Sam Farrow, Isaac Maine and Owen Swann.

The older squads had to overcome atrocious conditions the following weekend at Westcliff Rugby Club. The Chelmsford 11s and 12s kept the flag flying by winning their respective competitions without conceding a single try between.

The 11s outfought Chingford, Upper Clapton and Braintree before beating arch rivals Upminster in the semis. They emerged victorious in the final beating Brentwood by a single try. Top scorers were Lucas Spindler and Billy Walker.

Not to be overlooked the 12s also won all their games, beating Romford, Stanford Le Hope and Upper Clapton, before winning against Eton Manor in the semis. Once again it was Upminster who were the opponents, but the Chelmsford squad won by two tries to nil. Outstanding Alfie Adelman crossed the oppositions' try lines no less than eight times in five matches. The 12s move up from minis to youth next season.

It could have been a 'clean sweep' for the three older squads but the 10s narrowly lost to the outright winners Upminster, before overcoming Woodford and Westcliff. Progressing to the semi finals of the Plate they beat Thurrock in the semi final and Braintree in the final.

National U17s competition

Chelmsford 41
Grasshoppers 18

Chelmsford set down a marker for the other teams left in this prestigious competition with a scintillating second half performance. Playing uphill and into a strong wind in the first period Chelmsford struggled to live with the aggression and dynamism of Grasshoppers of Middlesex. A poor clearance kick gave the Grasshoppers wing the chance to run down the touchline and score in the corner, much to the delight of the vociferous travelling support. Things became even worse for Chelmsford as a cynical penalty was conceded soon afterwards, yielding 3 points. Chelmsford would have been happy to go into the break 8 nil down, but first a charge down leading to a try and then a controversial hands in the ruck decision for three points left them 18 points in arrears.

A try 30 seconds after the restart sparked the comeback in stunning fashion. A risky kick was well won by the revitalised Chelmsford pack and quick ball led to flyhalf Triggs going under the posts. With Grasshoppers heads dropping it was time for Chelmsford to turn the screw with a series of crashing drives in the midfield and with the Grasshoppers on the back foot an excellent break was made and finished by winger McBride. Another try soon followed, this time quick thinking from captain Morrison saw him burrow over.

At just one point behind Chelmsford knew the game was theirs for the taking and take it they did with a try from scrum half Brown. With the game safe Chelmsford fully unleashed, tapping penalties and running everything they could. There was not much Grasshoppers could do but admire the clinical finishing shown by McBride, Triggs and Brown for their second tries, and were it not for some forward passes the final score could have been much more. The game was epitomised with the last play when a Chelmsford driving maul travelled 60 metres before letting in McBride for his hat-trick. It was not to be though due to a mysterious forward pass. However, nothing could dampen the Chelmsford celebrations as they move forward to the semi final and truly this was a magnificent day for Chelmsford youth.

Chelmsford U10s and U12s - South Coast Rugby Champions

At the South Coast International Festival of Rugby on 5 and 6th April, CRFC U10s, U11s and U12s teams competed against some of the stronger teams from the UK.

In the U10 age group 16 teams competed for silverware. The CRFC U10s Rhinos displayed some of their most impressive rugby of the season dominating their pool against Buckingham, Cranbrook and Leighton Buzzard and went through to the Cup Semis without conceding a try. Here they met Tring 1 and secured a 10-5 win in wintery conditions to progress to the Cup Final. With the score 5-5 in the final against Towcestrians, the referee was forced to abandon the game due to heavy snow resulting in both teams being crowned South Coast Cup Champions.

The CRFC U10s Warriors also enjoyed success, progressing to the Bowl Semis where they met Bexley and drew 5-5 in what was a very competitive match that required some sustained defence from Chelmsford in the latter part of the game. As the Warriors had scored the first try in the Semis they went through to the Bowl Final.

Unfortunately, the Final could not be played due to adverse weather conditions and thus CRFC Warriors were crowned joint Bowl Champions with Leighton Buzzard.

The U12 lads started strongly and dominated their pool, securing wins over Cranbrook, Rhonnda and Basildon without conceding a try and scoring 14. Going into the second day, the U12s knew they would have to play well to reach the final and despite driving snow and a shocking first half they beat Buckingham 15-0 to progress to the final. After consulting with the other coaches it was agreed that due to the severity of the weather, the final could not be played and thus CRFC shared the Champions trophy with Brentwood who had drawn their semi with Rhonnda and gone through on the toss of a coin.

The U11s enjoyed mixed fortunes and unfortunately sustained a few injuries during their games yet still managed to finish third in their competition.
CRFC returned to Chelmsford with the 2 top trophies, a Bowl trophy and some very cold but happy players!!

Chelmsford U10s: Cup winners at the Upminster Festival (14th October 2007)
Squad: Alex Kembel, Harry Pilcher, Scott Griffin, Harry Ames, Tom Ritchie, Josh Gibbon, Chay Pollinger, Josh Wright, Sam Trowell, Sam Alderton, Steve Harrison, Jack Sylvester, Joseph Beal

Whilst England secured their place in the RWC final on Saturday evening, our U10s struck gold this weekend at one of the region's toughest rugby competitions. Around 1,000 young rugby players aged between six and twelve from Greater London, Hertfordshire, Essex and Kent competed in the first major event in the regional mini rugby calendar.

Conceding just two tries in their four pool games, the U10s thrashed Medway (30 - 0), drew with Upminster A (5 - 5), before beating Westcombe Park (5 - 0) and Westcliff (10 - 5) to qualify for the cup final. During the pool games they displayed solid, well-organised defence and even our smallest lads were flying in with huge tackles on the opposition. Their attacking skills were impressive too resulting in 7 of the 13 strong squad scoring tries during the day (Alex Kemble and Sam Alderton scoring 3 tries each, Jack Sylvester 2, then Josh Wright, Chay Pollinger, Scott Griffin and Sam Trowel each with 1). Meeting Stanford Le Hope yet again in another final, the Chelmsford U10s rose to the occasion. Despite attacking the up-hill slope in the first half, they held Stanford to 0 - 0 at half time but looking the stronger side in the second half, Chelmsford scored two outstanding tries. Stanford fought back with a try in the dying minutes but by that time the victory was secure. Chelmsford had won the Cup 10 - 5.

CHELMSFORD U10s versus HERTFORD (away) 7th October 2007

The first match of the season saw the CRFC U10's up against a club renowned for their strength at all age groups. With the introduction of the 'contested scrum' and 'contested line-out' for these teams, it was destined to be a challenge that our Chelmsford lads would relish!

Our boys were outstanding, the CRFC Rhinos competed against Hertford's A team and reminiscent of the World Cup quarter final between England and Australia, dominated the scrums. Our 3 big lads (Scott, Alex and Josh W) powered their way through the opposition, rucking, mauling and breaking the tackles. Other outstanding performances came from Sam and Sam T but it was a great team effort with Harry A, Chay, Jack S and Harry P providing solid support. Alex scored two tries through sheer grit and power, the opposition just couldn't get him down and Sam T also powered over for a third try that was disallowed (where is the video ref when you need him!). Hertford continued to maintain the pressure and came away with a well-deserved try. The final score 10 - 5 to Chelmsford Rhinos.

The CRFC warriors took on the Hertford Tigers and in the first half competed well, conceding just one try. The Tigers female prop was formidable, managing to ruck everyone off the ball! In the second half, Hertford dominated with periods of sustained pressure that secured them another 4 tries. The final score was 25 - 0 to the Tigers. An outstanding performance by Steve who made several breaks and was unlucky not to score and some great tackling by the two Toms and Joe. With some more work on the 'contested phases' of the game, all these squad players will be pushing for places in the Rhinos team.

To round off the matches, we played a combination of Rhinos and Warriors against a mixed Hertford team. CRFC and Hertford were evenly matched in this game, Josh W scoring in the first half and then breaking through several tackles to off load to Steve who secured CRFC's second try. Hertford's two break-away tries resulted in a 10 -10 draw.

Thanks to all the parents for their support, the squad of 19 players who performed admirably against such strong opposition and of course Hertford RFC for their hospitality.

Mouthgaurds
We would also like to draw your attention to the following Junior Section policy on mouthguards, which will be enforced from this season onwards:

The wearing of mouthguards whilst training or playing for Chelmsford Rugby Club is now mandatory for all players Under the age of 18.

It is strongly recommended that mouthguards are custom made from a dental impression of the teeth, particularly for players from Under 9s up who play contact rugby. However, mouthguards of the 'boil and bite' type are available from the club shop at very reasonable prices.

Coaches, referees, and officers of Chelmsford Rugby Club are not qualified to assess the quality of a mouthguard, and will therefore only be able to ensure that a mouthguard is being worn, and not it's standard, which remains the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

If a parent/guardian signs the written disclaimer stating that their child can play without a mouthguard, this can be accepted by the club, and the player may be excused from wearing a mouthguard.

Players whose parent/guardian have not signed the disclaimer will not be allowed to train or play without their mouthguard.
