Chelmsford II 27 Rochford II 10

Chelmsford entertained Rochford in a merit 1 league match in what could only be described as atrociuous conditions.

Chelmsford had a mix of youth and experience and got off to a great start when Warren Booty burst through the away defence and following several pairs of hands the ball ended with Lee McLeod going over in the corner and Chelmsford were ahead inside the first minute. Conversion missed.
Rochford going down the hill used their big forwards to put pressure on the home side and from a five metre scrum their scrum half broke through to score. Conversion missed.

Following this setback the home side scored again following a fine break by fly half Dom Fenton who put Matt Saville away to slide in at the corner and this was followed by a fantastic conversion by Andy Abbott. Chelmsford made an enforced change when Kev Thomsitt on his return hurt his hamstring and Ben Wellings came on into the back row with Warren Booty moving out to the wing.
Following sustained pressure Rochford scored again in the final minute of the first half and the half time score was 12-10 to Chelmsford.

Chelmsford knew the game plan in the second half and soon Rochford were defending heroically and turning over the Chelmsford ball. Rochford were soon reduced to 14 men when their back row was seen throwing a punch and he was sent to the sin bin. Chelmsford should have used this to their advantage but Rochford held out until they were back to full strength.

Andy Abbott scored with a penalty to increase the Chelmsford lead and this was shortly followed by a try from Fenton who broke the line again, dummied the full back and powered his way over through two despairing tackles. Abbott converted.

Max Bartell extended the lead with another try to end the scoring at Chelmsford 27 Rochford 10

Chelmsford II 12-15 Romford & Gidea Park

Chelmsford fielded a changed side from the previous weeks heroics. Several key positions saw new players, despite it being ahot day the game started lively with both sides changing possession although Romford ahd the weight advantage in the scrum. Romford were 1st to score with good handling down the pitch and their Soth African 2nd row scoring under the posts, swiftly followed by a further try due to lazy defending. Chelsmford slowly worked them selves up the park and were given a free kick 10 yds from the Romford posts. Dom Fenton saw that Romford were disorganised and ran throught their poor defensive line to score. Half time saw Chelmsford going down the slope and despite seveal forays into Romfords half points were difficult to come by. Several penalty kicks were missed and Romford again scored a try in the chelmsford corner. Chelmsford were dissallowed possesson by the match official in several instances at crucial times when advantage should have been played and this was the telling difference. Romford lost 2 players with 3 minutes to go and Chelmsford used that advantage to score a converted try. However time was agianst the home side and the game ended.

Eton Manor II 5 Chelmsford II 17

On a warm and sunny day Chelmsford travelled to Eton Manor for their opening Merit Table one match against an opposition who they normally struggle against early in the season. However, this all changed.

Chelmsford went into the game with a mix of youth and experience in key positions and the game plan was to front up early on.

Chelmsford made a great start and within two minutes of the start the forwards performed a rolling maul which Fenton then broke from the back of and drew in the fullback to put fly half Andrew Triggs away to score under the posts. Triggs converted his own try. This should have encouraged the away team but they took their foot off the peddle and allowed a mediocre opposition to stay in the game and the only other score was a try by the Eton Manor forwards to bring half time at 5-7 to Chelmsford.

Some stiff words were said at half time and Chelmsford knew that if they lifted their game they could dominate the second half.

Chelmsford again started well and Triggs played intelligently by putting the ball into the corners and keep Manor trying to play out of their 22. Chelmsford had numerous chances to increase the lead but either tried to complicate things or gave silly penalties away.

Eton Manor were tiring considerably and they began to give penalties away for high tackles and not retreating and it was one of these penalties that Triggs converted to extend the lead to 5-10. Eton Manor missed a penalty in the Chelmsford 22 and this was the last time they got near to Chelmsford's line.

The game was wrapped up with about ten minutes to go when following another rolling maul Fenton playing at scrum half broke again and this time dummied the fly half and full back and cantered in for the try. Triggs again converted to take the score to 5-17.

Chelmsford stayed for the rest of the game in the Eton Manor half and the last play saw a try disallowed for Paul Welch following a break from Max Bartell.

Although Chelmsford won they know there is a lot of work to still do on the training field but this was still a positive start.
